On Musicianship This has very little to do with Jazz Guitar or Arch Top Guitars but very much to do about Musicianship. If its not up your alley, then just delete it. Years ago I attended a workshop given by Hank Jones at the New School in NYC. Whether one believes, adheres to, or disbelieves the following is not why Im sharing this. Its a very interesting concept that is based on Hank Jones experience - it is not written in stone. Hank talked about the art of practicing, what to practice, and how to practice. His basic premise, base don his experience, went like this: generally, most musicians practice from a starting point of their Strengths and spend almost no time practicing their Weaknesses. In fact, he went on to explain how music psychologists have done studies and polls on the music musicians like to hear, being music that most exemplifies their likes in genre, styles, and types. Jones went on to explain how musicians shy away, or dislike, forms of music that intuitively represents, or in some ways embodies their own musical skill weakness. Music psychologists explain this as the brains intuitive kinesthetic, subliminal and cognitive awareness of ones own denial of any certain musical concept, or ones own musical skill weakness, whether consciously or unconsciously admitting it - it inevitable is witnessed in what, how, and why a musician plays what he does, and what he likes. Whats particularly remarkable about these studies is the fact that once a musician recognizes his own limitations based on his weaknesses, and goes forth to remedy the facts and improves, it is noteworthy to acknowledge that his prior dislikes of some forms of music changes.
