On my bike, I was overtaking a couple young men on skateboards on the bike path in Carpinteria. As soon as they heard me coming, they picked up their boards and moved out of the way. I thanked them for their courtesy. Actually, whoever raised them to be courteous is owed the thanks ... and so on, back down the line. Though reward shouldnt be the motive behind courtesy, courtesy is usually rewarding as it builds good will and cooperation. There ought to be a law! Often said and acted upon when someone is discourteous, especially to the point of endangering life and limb. How many times has one person ruined a care free/rule free situation by being discourteous? On the other hand, some people simply want to make rules in the name of excessive fastidiousness or exactness. Example: a sign recently appeared at 24 hour fitness. Please wear flip flops in the pool area/sauna/steam room. We should be reasonable and tolerant. And we should say something, politely, to someone who is being discourteous; more strongly if they continue to misbehave. The last thing we need is to burden ourselves with more laws, rules and regulations. As Rodney King famously said, cant we all just get along?
