On my way to work this blissful morning. Last week my daughter - the one finishing SPM this year - called because the school has a prom party and the head charge is - yes - RM150 per kid. Plus another RM50 for something else. Of course, for my precious daughter, nothing is too expensive. I sent the money immediately. But I disagree with these schools in Malaysia which unashamedly nurture lavish celebrations thats not even part of our culture. So what do you do with the parents who are already botak kepala paying for a 20 sen hike in gas prices, and trying to save up for school opening next semester? Burn the uniform money on a party? (you certainly wouldnt have them heart to say no to these things). Knowing that all these kids will have to deal with the harsh reality of balancing expenses as soon as they graduate (at which time, after paying for PTPTN, youre lucky if you can afford Sushi King), this isnt what schools need to teach.
