On the 21st July 2014 a female described as in her late 20s, 5ft 5, long dark hair wearing a cream wool chunky cardigan with leggings was reported to be trying to spend fake £20 notes. The attempt was made in Harpurhey Shopping Centre; they are of a poor quality and even look/feel fake but please ensure you check notes when accepting payment by using a ultra-violet (UV) Light. If you look at the front of a £20 note under a good quality ultra-violet light, the number 20 will appear in bright red and green while the background is dull in contrast. Randomly spread bright red and green flecks are also visible on both the front and back of the note. These fluorescent features cannot be seen under normal light If you get a counterfeit note 1. Retain the suspect note without putting staff at risk 2. Give the customer a receipt explaining that the note will be handed to the Police. Explain that suspect notes subsequently discovered to be genuine will be returned 3. Call the police on 101 or take it to your nearest Police station 4. This note will be then sent to the Bank of England for analysis; if it is genuine then the note will be returned.
