On the anniversary of her death we honor the great soprano Maria - TopicsExpress

On the anniversary of her death we honor the great soprano Maria Callas. Callas, who was surely the most widely acclaimed soprano of the mid-century, was commonly referred to as “La Divina,” and #Bernstein, who was amazed by the range of her accomplishments, called her “the Bible of Opera.” Bernstein, who blazed many trails for American musicians, was the first American to conduct at La Scala. La Scala brought together the forces of Bernstein and Callas, as they were invited to perform productions of Medea and La Sonnambula. Here is a 1953 audio recording of Callas singing the Finale (E Che? Io son Medea!) of Cherubinis Medea, conducted by Leonard Bernstein at La Scala. https://youtube/watch?v=FptWaSW-siQ
