On the way back to my apartment from campus today, I was listening - TopicsExpress

On the way back to my apartment from campus today, I was listening to a segment on the radio regarding the landslide that occurred in Washington state last week. During the segment, the host was talking to the mother of one of the missing people. At the time, her son and his fiancé were at his grandmothers house, where they were to be married this summer. Since the search for the 90+ missing people is still on going, they are all still considered missing, compared to the 26 confirmed fatalities. During the segment the mother talked about the passion for life, and each other, that her son and fiancé shared. However, in the closing remarks of the segment, the mother went on to say that they are in a better place now, saying that she hopes her son will be returned to her, but accepting that this is not likely to happen. I never realized it before, but I really hate when people say things like that. They are in a better place. I realize that there are situations in which, toward the end of a persons life, they are in terrible pain, discomfort, so on. I know, I have experienced it within my family. But that is not a reason to forsake the time that they have spent on Earth. If you choose to believe in an afterlife, whether it be Heaven or some equivalent, that is a wonderful belief. It is beautiful. Cherish that. But once again, the belief or promise of an afterlife is no reason to belittle the wonder of Life and our planet. Life is a beauty. It is here. It is now. There are many problems that exist in our world, but they are a product of us. Most of them are out of the control of the individual, but that is not reason for us not to work toward them together. And of the problems that do exist which are within our control, there is no excuse for not doing anything about them. The fact that there are so many hurdles to the path of a better future should not cause you to feel hopeless. The fact that the ability and knowledge to make change exists within you (or at least can, if you so wish) should cause one to feel unbound. Infinite
