On their website, NASA says that FTL is likely impossible and that ideas about a warp drive are on the level of speculation. But I dont understand why anyone would want to travel to other planets in their actual bodies. Space travel as a metaphor is fine. Travel to other levels of consciousness or perception, Ok. Some kind of spiritual or psychic or astral travel-- there are millenia of annectodal reports of people experiencing this. But actually getting in a ship and going somewhere? Whats the point? There is no evidence that habitable planets exist, or that it would be possible or practical to get there, or that it would be safe to get there, or that it would be morally good to go. If we cannot respect this planet and love one another on it, why should we be allowed another to destroy and spread oppression? Anything that extends the chain of our wastefulness and greed, increases our lack gratitude and care. A civilization based on colonialism and exploitation-- to extend that out in space? To imagine new possibilities is human. And the idea of space travel is useful as metaphor and mythology to meditate on aspects of the human condition-- but to try to make it a practical, physical reality seems unhealthy... in my opinion. I sense something psychologically disturbing there. And thats my 2 cents.
