Salute to those that stood up to this! from Bread and Roses 1912-2012 On July 17, 1944, two ammunition ships explode at Port Chicago, Calif., killing 322, including 202 African-American workers assigned by the Navy to handle explosives. It was the worst home-front disaster of World War II. During World War II, at Port Chicago, a segregated naval munitions base on the outer shores of San Francisco Bay, Black seamen loaded ammunition onto ships bound for the South Pacific under the watch of their white officers—an incredibly dangerous and physically challenging task.
