On this date in History ..... July 13, 1951: Record floods hit Kansas, leaving 500,000 people homeless, 24 dead, and 2 million acres of farmland lost. The water level crest was higher than any previous crests in history from four to nine feet. Rain began falling in June and continued through July 13, dropping over 25 inches of water. Some train passengers traveling thru the area were stuck on the train for four days. As a result, levees and reservoirs were constructed to avoid such loss in the future. crh.noaa.gov/Image/top/events/flood1951/flood1.jpg
