On this day 1798 the founding Father of Irish Republicanism Theobald Wolfe Tone died as a result of a suicide attempt rather than die as a common criminal that was a subject to the Crown. One of his goals in his own words was To unite Protestant, Catholic and Dissenter under the common name of Irishmen in order break the connection with England, the never failing source of all our political evils, that was my aim. He was also one of the founding fathers of the United Irishmen & help sow the seeds to modern day Republicans in their continuing pursuit of ending British Occupation in our country.
