On this day in 1958, Hall of Fame pitcher Phil Niekro signed with the Milwaukee Braves as an amateur free agent. Following several years pitching in the minor leagues and a stint in the military, Niekro made his major league debut with the Braves in 1964. Arguably the greatest knuckleball pitcher of all time, Niekro spent twenty seasons with the Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves (1964-83) and, during that time, accumulated 2,912 strike outs and 268 wins.
