On this day in 1973 NASAs Pioneer 10 spacecraft sent back the first-ever closeup images of Jupiter. The spacecraft carried 11 scientific instruments and kept returning data until January 2003 when the final transmission was received. By then, the spacecraft had reached a distance of 80 AU from the Sun. Besides its scientific legacy, Pioneer 10 and its successor Pioneer 11 are notable for carrying a gold-anodized aluminum plaque depicting information about Earth and its people. Carl Sagan came up with the idea in case either probe were found by intelligent extraterrestrials.
