One of the few points of agreement i have with Tony Abbott is Nuclear Energy. Even though its not a Liberal party policy, Tony has publicly stated he supports Nuclear energy. France now claims a substantial level of energy independence and almost the lowest cost electricity in Europe. They also have the lowest CO2 emissions of any developed country. They went all-in on Nuclear back in the 1970s and the result today they have less than a 3rd of our carbon emissions per capita. (5.62 metric tons per person per year, compared to us at 18.38 metric tons). I just wish Adam Bandt and Scott Ludlam would start looking at this data seriously. Germany currently has a huge focus on renewable technologies, and they are shutting their nuclear plants down. However their CO2 emissions are now GROWING as they are forced to replace their nuclear plants with coal. This is not to say I dont support solar and wind, I absolutely do, but we should be investing heavily in both technologies, as together they can solve world energy for a long time to come and deal effectively with global warming at the same time. In regards to the dangers of nuclear energy, if we look objectively at the statistics we will find that nuclear is actually one of the safest forms of energy production. Check out the number of coal/pollution related deaths, or the casualties from hydro power when huge dams break. Not to mention the long term damage coal is doing to the mothership.
