One of the questions I get asked a lot, professionally, is how large a knife one may legally carry on ones person.... I am going to attempt to answer it, to the best of my knowledge, BUT I AM NOT A LAWYER- that said, here goes: First off, we are covering my home state of Missouri here, and covering state statutes, not local ones.... There is no legal preemption here, so a city or town can make a ridiculous law applying to knives,(but not guns, thank god) and some have (Kirkwood has made it illegal to carry anything over 1.5 inches) . So as far as the state is concerned, open carry of knives, swords, guns, etc, is just fine.... Concealed carry is a different matter, as you cannot carry a whole host of things on you, pretty much any cutting instrument is included in the no nos list, but the statute bellow offers one exemption: 571:010 (12) "Knife", any dagger, dirk, stiletto, or bladed hand instrument that is readily capable of inflicting serious physical injury or death by cutting or stabbing a person. For purposes of this chapter, "knife" does not include any ordinary pocketknife with no blade more than four inches in length; So, at least here in MO, its a four inch folder concealed, and anything on the belt.... unless you live in a horrible place like kirkwood, which makes idiotic laws limiting it to smaller blades.....
