One-year jail term for zebra crossing abusers Motorists and cyclists face a one-year jail term or a fine of sh600,000 for failure to abide by zebra crossing guidelines, the Police has said. Police is to crack down on motorists who do not give pedestrians enough time to cross at zebra crossing points. PHOTO/Abou Kisige These follow numerous complaints from pedestrians about motorists and cyclists who have abused zebra crossing rules. The Kampala metropolitan Police spokesperson, Patrick Onyango, said: “Most of the motorists no longer stop or respect zebra crossings, especially in the city centre and its suburbs. “Instead, pedestrians have to wait for the vehicles and bodabodas to create way for them along the crossings. The rules are clear; motorists and cyclists should stop at any zebra crossing when pedestrians are crossing the road.” The police spokesman gave more tips to road users during a press conference on Monday. “According to traffic rules, parking should be five metres away from the crossing and motorists are supposed to slow down or even halt once pedestrians cross the road,” he said. He said the Police would deploy more personnel along those areas so that people who fail to respect them are arrested and taken to court. Some of the zebra crossings often abused include Lugogo By-pass, Post Office, Bombo Road, Buganda Road and Wandegeya round-about.
