Ooh, a cool addition to the anti-privilege knapsack canon (Im late in finding it, I guess). The essay cites Smiths similar one at some length, as it should. Also, it excerpts vintage Obama critique, Josh Lukin Jsmn Gbsn! I do think Wises position as /the/ white antiracist, of ever, as showcased in this one interview, creates something of a straw argument here, because there are many schools of antiracism that do /not/ equate whiteness to tallness (e.g. most of tumblr)---and Im not even sure Tim Wise does that here, because hes not the one who makes the joke---but are nevertheless problematic. There are problems to the knapsack approach regardless of its degree of politicization. Also, Wises flavor of the antiracist Left relies on ableist rhetoric pretty heavily (psych ableism in particular; hes all into sanity and he thinks Ron Paul belongs in a straitjacket):. Thats useful to consider in nuanced discussions of his talkingness, because privilege (as concept) is produced and mediated at complex intersections of power and the politics of speaking that arent addressed within the scope of Robtheidealists article. For whom does Tim Wises discourse (re)create a voice? Tagging Everardo Junior Cuevas and Ian OBrien because identity politics is not the answer.
