Opposition leader Bill Shorten used a National Press Club address - TopicsExpress

Opposition leader Bill Shorten used a National Press Club address on Wednesday to slam Mr Abbott over his policy agenda. We should look at what Tony Abbotts lack of vision has done to Australias economy, he said. Growth has slumped, the deficit has doubled, weve reached a 12-year high in unemployment and a 13-year high in youth unemployment. -- Those are at least partly the results of external factors, so not entirely their fault. Unlike the previous government though, this one is clueless when times are tough. They assumed the forecasts of good times ahead were true, so have been wasting money on paying for priesthoods, chaplains etc while reducing spending on science - the assumption being that boom profits in private industry would take up the slack there (something thats never, ever happened in Australias history, regardless of economic conditions). They were supposed to be able to claim the credit for what was forecast anyway. But that didnt happen, they bet the farm on commodities and starved industry. When we need stimulus - NOT in theology but in publicly owned infrastructure and consumer spending - theyve caused contraction, or done nothing. And the worst is yet to come.
