Our 5yr Blue Pit Bull Boz is Battling Blasto (although blood test - TopicsExpress

Our 5yr Blue Pit Bull Boz is Battling Blasto (although blood test was negative) .... His story... Boz started out with what seemed to be a Upper Respiratory Infection, was being treated with antibiotics, eye drops and pain meds, within days of this visit Boz began to have vestibular symptoms, He couldnt walk on our hard wood or any slick floor surface, couldnt eat / drink from his bowl. Our vet drew the labs for Blasto kept him overnight and started Itraconazole .. Now we had never spent the night apart ! So this was heartbreaking! I didnt sleep at all that night and up and back at the vet by 8 am to visit and plead to bring him home.. Doc wasnt convinced I should bring him home, but by noon a call came from his staff stating if I was certain I could get all of his meds down him he could come home!! Welll heck yes, of course those pills are going down!! and my Boz is coming home to his king size pillow top... still he was so very weak, and had to be leashed to walk outside to potty, picked up to put in and out of bed. Hand feedings 3 times daily , I didnt care I would do anything for him. I laid awake at night and would cry just terrified he may not make it through the night. Within a week of Itraconazole he was improving. Unfortunately the Itraconazole is on a backorder list and we have at to start Amphotericin B IV 3 times weekly. He has had 7 infusions with 2 more to go and wow he is doing so much better. I know we have a way to go, after the Amphotericin B he will take Ketoconazole for several months. I hear it is not uncommon for the blood test to be negative 70-80% of the time . Boz is now eating well , gait is back to normal seems to be improving daily. This truly is a scary scary disease that most do not know about. Too bad there is no vaccine :(
