Our Grandson Tylers practice practice practice has paid off!! We are so proud of you!!! Late flurry lifts freshman to TRAC golf title 09/30/2014 10:19 PM KEWANEE -- Tyler Bussert already owns a links resume to make most high-school golfers jealous. However, the Riverdale freshman added to his impressive career achievements Tuesday, beating out one of the areas top seniors, Sherrards former state-qualifier Grant Morse, to win individual honors at the Three Rivers Conference championship meet. Bussert, who turned 15 only a few weeks ago, finished with a 1-under 70 at Kewanees Baker Park to top Morse by four strokes in a loaded 15-team, 90-golfer field. With this starting the postseason tournaments, this lets me know for sure I can hang with the older guys, said Bussert, who already should know that, having competed this summer in the open mens division of the Quad City Amateur Tour. Grants a great competitor and a great guy. He was real fun to play with. What a thrill to edge a guy whos been there and done that as far as getting to the state tournament. This was a real confidence-builder for me. Ditto in the team title chase, with Amboy (332 strokes) edging 10th-seeded Prophetstown (333). Riverdale and Morrison tied for third at 336 in a tightly packed field, while Kewanee and Sherrard shared sixth at 338. Fulton (9th at 351), Orion (10th at 360), Rockridge (11th at 363) and Erie (13th at 377) also competed in the 18-hole tournament, which featured a shotgun start and four-man playing groups teeing off on different holes. What a great surprise, said Prophetstown coach Karen Wiersema, whose club finished a rather pedestrian 7-8 in dual meets this fall. We were forecast to be in the middle of the pack, but I told the boys (Monday night), they were better than their record. A couple of those duals we lost on tiebreakers. Weve been so close this season, it was nice to see us finally put it together. This gives us a lot of momentum heading into next weeks regional. The Prophets were the only team to place a pair of players in the Top 10. Jackson Ames tied for fourth with a 76. Grant Ames shared eighth with an 81. But, everybody played great, Wiersema said. To do this well in such a tough conference -- its the best small-school league in the state, I think -- it takes a total team effort. Guys were wishing they had this or that shot back, but I told them, in this conference, well take it. Also making the Top 10 all-conference team were two others that played in the same group as Bussert and Morse -- Kewanees Ryan Hansen (third at 75) and Morrisons Noah Hogue (tied for eighth with 81). Fultons Bret Terrock also fired an 81 to share eighth. We had a really great group of guys, Bussert said. It was easy to play. We all fed off each other. Bussert and Morse, especially. The group started on Hole No. 7, to finish the final three holes of the front nine, before making the clubhouse turn to play the back nine. Through 12 holes, Bussert and Morse were tied at 2-over, but on Baker Parks first hole, Morse pushed his drive right, and found trouble behind a bush, needing to punch out instead of firing for the hole. The errant tee shot resulted in a bogey for Morse while Bussert birdied the hole. That was a two-shot swing, Morse said. That was the difference right there. I got a little unlucky there. I felt like I hit the ball better than I scored. But it was still a good start to the postseason for me. Ditto for Bussert, who birdied three of his final six holes to pull away from Morse. Freshman or not, its an amazing feeling winning this conference, Bussert said. But now, I hope theres more to come.
