Over 50 years ago, Ayn Rand described what would happen as government and politicians continued to gain power over people through increasing regulation, taxation, and infringements upon individual rights. Today we see the politicans demanding that our First Amendment rights be abridged. We see politicians demanding that businesses be prevented from leaving the country. We see more and more aspects of our lives coming under political control. Rand was very prescient, because she understood the power of ideas, in particular the vicious power of the idea that men do not have the right to exist for their own sake, but must exist only to serve society or the government, i.e., others. Her projections of a future in Atlas Shrugged are the inevitable consequence of that destructive idea. Her projections of that future are coming to pass. Ideas have consequences.
