PAY CUTS: TELL THAT TO THE PIGS AND LEAVE US ALONE. A key thing missing in this government is not initiative but direction. The pay cuts have caught every dick, Tom and Harry supporting, but this is the naked truth. The rich are not cutting anything. A new job analysis needs to be done and stop road side and cattle dip declarations. Job Design specifies the contents of the job in order to satisfy the work requirements and meet the personal needs of the job holder, thus increasing levels of employee engagement. Whether deliberately or by default, choices are made about which tasks to group together to form a job, the extent to which job holders should follow prescribed procedures in completing those tasks, how closely the job incumbent will be supervised, and numerous other aspects of the work. As such there would be retention at work with a clear job design to avoid unnecessary confusion and overlap of roles. Macey et al (2009:29) ‘commented that people come to work for pay but get engaged at work because the work they do is meaningful’. Intrinsic motivation and therefore increased engagement can be generated by the work itself if it provides interest and opportunities for achievement and self-fulfillment. Hickam and Oldham (1974) proponents of characteristics of a job were of the opinion that the features to be taken into account on job design are variety, autonomy, required interaction, optimal interaction, knowledge and skill required and responsibility. Better work will mean more productivity that is input+ Process = Super output, its this ouput that can be taxed, Uhuruto should stop the ‘gut feel declarations’ and do a sound JOB ANALYSIS and come out with policies to boost employee engagement and thereby productivity, to spread the tax net. Equally, they should slice corruption through key tender process. End payouts to noise makers ‘test tube politicians’ and reclaim the Goldenberg and Anglo leasing cash. Stop renovating houses with millions (value for money), Expensive jets for shuttle diplomacy, and improve on security to improve investment. Poor policies in the mining sector are also driving away investors as kazungu Kambi is allegedly asking for Kick backs.
