PEACE STUDIES~~ECOWAS Economic Community of West Africa State (ECOWAS) formed in the 1970s was conceived with the aim of promoting economic development, when the region had had real peace. But when it began to get voatile, and with increase in insecurity, with the outbreak of the Liberian war in 1989, with the protocol on mutual Assistance on Defense of 1981, ECOWAS was required to send peace keeping force to Liberia which my Dad was among the second bash of officers and men of the Nigerian army as a soldier then to end war that has left many killed, wounded and displaced. The ECOMOG peace keeping force was sent into Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea Bissau. The wars in the countries went on for decades and Charles Taylor is the main aggressor who was accused of invading Sierra Leone and destabilized the region. Hundreds of Nigeria, Ghanaian and Guinean tropes were drafted to defend the countries invaded by Liberia. Nigeria is known to play a leading role in ECOMOG and the Liberian president, Ellen Johnson has appealed to Nigerian Government to help rebuild the Liberian Army, and Nigerian Mayor, General Yusuf was appointed the Chife of Armed Forces to head the Liberian Armed forces in March 2006. ECOWAS also adopted non-military approach in managing conflict in the region. They also have the ECOWAS Conflit Management and Resolution Protocol which is very active in meditation and diplomatic negotiation. They have the council of wise men made up of retired Heads of States and respectable statemen. They are sent to negotiate peace before, during and after conflicts . One success story is the Liberian story where General Abdulsalami mediated in Ghaha in 2003/4. This led to the romoval of Charles Taylor from Liberia. He was granted political asylum in Nigeria and Liberia , had to reorganize, had election in October of 2005 and president Ellen John emerged as the President of Liberia, who was sworn in January 2006............. Up next is the UNITED NATION.
