POLICE MUSEUM - Were hosting our first ever Wikipedia ‘editathon’ this Saturday so that members of the public can write about policing history for the world’s largest free internet encyclopedia. The West Midlands Police Museum in Sparkhill is not regularly open to the public, but to help celebrate its 40th year, the force are inviting members of the public to come to the museum armed with their laptops to write about policing history. Volunteer writers will be given access to original artifacts and documents held at the museum to write and improve articles on policing history and will be able to take photographs of things they write about. Former police officers will also be on hand to give a short talk about the museum and to help writers navigate their way around the museum’s collection. The event will be most beneficial for experienced Wikipedia editors but assistance for new editors will be available from local Wikipedia editor, Andy Mabbett. The event will run 10am-4pm Saturday 15 March and lunch will be provided for volunteers. Places at the event are limited but editors can sign up via Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:GLAM/WM_Police_Museum Photographs and facts will be tweeted out from the editathon. You can also follow the event on the hashtag #WikiWMP or on the West Midlands Police twitter account @WMPolice. The event forms part of the force’s 40th anniversary celebrations. The force turns 40 on 1 April this year. Funding for the event comes from the IEWM New Ideas Fund.
