POLITICS: Jonathan, Amaechi in battle for the soul of NGF. 26th June, 2013. LEGISREPORTS NG: In what apparently seems to be a brewing storm in the making, President Goodluck Jonathan and Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Ameachi are locked in a brutal battle of wits for the soul of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, NGF, which for a while has been at the centre of controversies sequel to its last elections. LEGISREPORTS recalls that the election which produced Amaechi as Chairman of the Forum was described as unfair by a faction of Governors whose loyalties rested with the Plateau State Governor, Jonah Jang, who is said to be the Presidency’s candidate. Sequel to Ameachi summoning a meeting of the NGF on Monday, President Goodluck Jonathan also summoned an emergency dinner meeting of all state Governors for Wednesday night, at the exact day and time the NGF meeting ought to hold. It was however gathered that President Jonathan’s invitation was sent out three hours after Amaechi sent out his, a calculated move intended to test the loyalty of, and identify Governors in league with the River State Governor who are opposed to the President’s administration. Meanwhile, the lingering crisis within the NGF was sparked of owing to the existence of two factions created by the outcome of the May 24 elections which caused a rift among Governors. The result of the election which saw the emergence of incumbent Rotimi Amaechi as chair of the forum was outrightly rejected by his Plateau State Counterpart and his faction who were defeated by 19 to 16 votes as “unfair.” This led to the establishment of a parallel secretariat chaired by Jang. During its first meeting that held last week Monday at the summons of the Chairman, 19 Governors from the opposition and the PDP who voted Amaechi in shunned attendance owing to their insistence to demonstrate staunch loyalty for Amaechi who was suspended by the previous National Working Committee of the PDP. This report was prepared by our reporter in Abuja.
