POR QUÉ LOS HOMBRES NECESITAN TOCARSE MÁS UNO AL OTRO (Why Men Need to Touch Each Other More) The part of this article that stuck out for me was this: In the 1960′s, psychologist Sidney Jourard observed pairs of individuals at cafes in various countries to see how often touch was made in a one hour period. In the United States, pairs touched, on average two times. Conversely, French pairs touched an average of 110 times, while those in Puerto Rico touched an average of 180 times. Our own culture is touch deprived. There was a lot of bad touch in my family growing up, but not a lot of good touch. Side hugs if you could manage one. I remember complaining of my ear hurting just so I could lay my head on my moms lap for a while as she would look in my ear. The culture tells men in general that touch isnt masculine. Recall the line from a recent Die Hard movie -were not a hugging family. They may as well have said, were an emotionally crippled family creating children unable to form emotional bonds and you should be too. This is an example of masculine culture enjoying telling each other that they dont need to feel, they dont need to experience the scary emotions of bonding and need for others and the relational risk that implies. In effect it is telling men that it is masculine to be relational cowards. This is one messed up culture.
