POST-SABBATICAL NOTES. 17 SEPT 2014. WED. N2. Scotland and its two futures. A lesson in civics, democracy, and justice. A lesson for the Philippine leaders. THURSDAY is the day. Scotland will vote--they must have started already even if in Honolulu it is still Wednesday--for a choice of two futures. The news account says there is no in-between in this choice, and it must be so. 300 years ago, it lost its independence and then it became just a nation under a bigger nation state based in London. But 700 years ago, it was able to still defend its own sense of independence until it succumbed to the seductions of UK-icization. 300 years, that happened to Catalunya and then it became just an autonomous region as matter of concession under a bigger nation state based in Madrid. 2014 must be a year of independence for these peoples, and pretty soon, those oppressed by Imperial Manila will consider getting away from its clutches. Some say that for every 100 pesos Mindanao gives to Imperial Manilas coffers, only 30 pesos go back to Mindanao, most of which ending up in the pockets of the Ampatuans and the conscience-less politicians like them. This is not what democracy is all about and the Scots see this marriage as worth annulling. This is not what justice is all about and the Catalans see this union as not worth keeping. East Timor had done this many years ago. There is no reason why the Scots and the Catalans could not do it. Are the Valencians of Spain coming in next? WPH/
