POVERTY IS THE ISSUE, LETS FIGHT IT. In Avian Pathology, there is a disease called Infectious Bursal Disease (or Gumboro disease - named after the community in Delaware, US where it was first discovered in 1962). It is an immuno-suppressive ailment that affects an organ called Bursa. Bursa is where chickens produce what helps their immune system to fight diseases. Therefore Gumboro stops the capacity of chickens to fight diseases. Once it strikes, mortality (or death rate ) can rise to about 25 to 30 percent or more! Poverty is like gumboro. It limits the capacity of the poor to think straight. Like Gunboro, poverty lays its victims bare for all kinds of oppressive tendencies. A poor man is not capable of rational thinking seeing, as it were, he is obssessed with the basic needs of existence. How does a man who hasnt eaten today or has no means of livelihood plan for the education of his children, his own medical checkup, his insurance policy or a mortgage plan? How does he stand up to challenge his oppressors? How does he join up with others to mobilise in synergy to vote out a corrupt government? People are so so poor in Nigeria. And Im not talking about spiritual poverty yet. Jesus said blessed are the poor in spirit for they shall inherit His Kingdom but the poor in spirit in Nigeria are not even acknowledging it. But I digress. What Im concerned about most here is material poverty. Eighty per cent of Nigerians and much of sub-saharan Africa are poor. The UN says they barely survive on less than 2 Dollars a day. 2 Dollars (or N320) is even a lot here. There are those who do not get N50 a day! Yet in this country, people drive N30million cars, live inside N500m mansions send their children to schools where they pay N5m per session school fees! The rich in Nigeria are the most unthinking group of rich people in the whole world. They do not know that on the day the poor would stand up and protest, they would not be safe! They do not know that on the day the poor would have nothing to eat again, it is the rich theyd start to devour! No alsatian or dobemann dogs will stop them, no electric fence nor security man will stop them! Poor people get to political office but instead of helping the poor, they go into a mad rush to join the rich league themselves! Such foolishness! They have forgotten the storming of the Bastille in France in the 18th Century. Theyve forgotten the end of the Mobutus, the Bokassas of this continent. There were once certain rich people in Nigeria whom we used to hear of but about whom we hear nothing once they died. Poverty is the reason for Boko haram, kidnappings, armed robbery, prostitution etc that plague us today. Let us alleviate poverty and peace shall return to our land. And Im not talking about buying refrigerators, hair driers, okada bikes etc for people. I amtalking about policies that will help the people realise all the latent entrepreneurial potentials that the Almighty has deposited into all of us in various measures. The Scripture says, He led captivity captive and gave GIFTS unto men! All men are endowed! To those who have the power, let me tell u, the children of the poor that u refuse to educate and give opportunities to today shall tomorrow disturb the comfort of your own children! One day, the poor shall have nothing else to eat, but the rich. May God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
