PRESS RELEASE Mumbai’s heart captured through word, image and poetry Mumbai: September 5, 2013 Noted film maker and senior journalist, Shri Pritish Nandy and senior journalist Shri Anil Dharker released Niyogi Books’ new title, Bombay/Mumbai Immersions at a simple but elegant function organized by Kitabkhab Khana and Niyogi Books here today. The book is authored by Priya Sarukkai Chabria, renowned poet, writer and translator and Christopher Taylor, an internationally acclaimed photographer. Bombay/Mumbai Immersions is a book of contemplative essays and art photographs. It gives the reader the experience of the city of Bombay/Mumbai with its pungent edginess, its geography, teeming personal histories, evidence of ruin and new rooting, its pulsing and often putrid corporality. By mapping different rhythms of time as it flows through the metropolis, Bombay/ Mumbai Immersions is a cross genre book dipping into memoir, travelogue, investigation and poetic reflection. The author and photographer roved Bombay/Mumbai to experience it afresh as the city imagined and desired by millions and the mean city of mindboggling inequality, demographics and vitality. Through vivid and poignant stories encountered on its streets and in little known trades, delving into its history and Bollywood’s branching requirements, visiting relatively unexplored precincts and the atmospherics of high-rises and heritage villages, a map of the city emerges— ephemeral but as memorable as the sun setting over the Arabian sea. Conceptually stimulating, elegantly written and accompanied by haunting images, this book is a compassionate, dramatic and in depth take on the life of a cruel and captivating world metropolis even as it is an intense meditation on living in the 21st century. Priya Sarukkai Chabria is a poet, writer and translator. She is the recipient of the Indian Government’s Senior Fellowship to Outstanding Artists. She has studied the Rasa Theory of Aesthetics, co-founded a club that showed silent films and collaborated with dancer Malavika Sarukkai; she edits the website Poetry at Sangam. Her books include two poetry collections, a novel and a speculative fiction narrative. Her work is in numerous international journals, websites and various anthologies in India and abroad. Forthcoming are The Autobiography of a Goddess, translations of Tamil mystic Aandaal’s songs, and a book on cinema. A collection of love stories set in Bombay is forthcoming with Niyogi Books. Christopher Taylor is an English photographer based in France. A zoologist by training, this self-taught photographer mostly uses a cumbersome studio camera or else an ancient Rolleiflex even in the busiest streets. His photographs never fail to surprise. He has held critically acclaimed exhibitions in Paris, Arles, London, Beijing, Delhi, Mumbai, and Calcutta.
