PRESS RELEASE NAPOLEONVILLE---Sheriff Mike Waguespack reports that at approximately 5:30 pm on Sunday, March 23rd, a Patrol Sergeant intercepted a Chevy Tahoe travelling at a high rate of speed heading south bound on Highway 1. The Patrol Sergeant made a u-turn in an effort to catch up with the speeding vehicle and the vehicle then increased its speed before slowing to turn onto Cancienne Road. While still travelling at an excessive rate of speed in a residential area, the vehicle made a left turn onto Delaune Street and hit and ran over a 4 year old child riding his bike. The child was immediately air lifted by Acadian Ambulance to a Baton Rouge Hospital and is currently in stable condition with moderate to severe injuries. After hitting the child, 4 occupants of the vehicle including the driver exited the vehicle and fled the scene running into a wooded area. 3 of the 4 subjects including the driver were apprehended and detained by responding deputies within a half hour. At the request of Sheriff Mike Waguespack, Louisiana State Police (Troop C) was contacted to handle the investigation with respect the accident involving the Suspect Driver of the vehicle and the pedestrian on his bike. Upon completion of its initial investigation, a Trooper with Louisiana State Policed (LSP) arrested and booked the driver, Larry Wiggins, age 28, of 2969 Highway 1, Napoleonville, Louisiana with the following charges: Felony Hit and Run, Unlicensed Driver, DWI 2nd Offense, and First Degree Vehicular Negligent Injury. The Assumption Parish Sheriff Patrol Sergeant booked Wiggins with Aggravated Flight from an Officer, Speeding (72 in a 50 mph zone) and Resisting an Officer. Wiggin’s felony bonds have not been set by the 23rd Judicial Court as of the time of this news release.
