PRESS RELEASE THE YOUTH PLATFORM FOR LAGOS STATE GUBERNATORIAL DEBATE To create a platform for engagement between the Governorship candidate, Youths cum Students, The joint youth forum (Comprising: National ‘’Youth’’ Council of Nigeria Lagos State Chapter, Majlis Khudamm-ul Ahmadiyya Nigeria, Lagos State., Omoluabi Youth Forum, National Association of Nigerian Student Lagos State Chapter and African Resourceful Leaders Foundation ) is pleased to announce the hosting of its “1ST LAGOS GUBERNATORIAL DEBATE” on Tuesday, January 27, 2015; at the University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos, from 4 pm. The 2008 declaration by the African union general assembly affirming 2009 to 2019 ‘African Decade for Youth’ is in recognition of youth identity and politics as a global driving force for social transformation. The declaration was premised on the need to increase global interest in youth participation and development. Despite eliciting on encouraging level of interest, the policies and programs designed to scale up the level of youth participation has yielded limited result. According to the Nigerian youth manifesto (2011), active and constructive youth participation in Nigerian electoral process has gradually become non-existent over the years. Apparently, most youth in the political space, particularly those in political parties are often time used thugs by politicians who seek selfish political gains through perpetuation of violence. For an all encompassing and participatory democracy to thrive, Nigeria young people must play important and active roles in determining the political future of their country by engaging political actors with demands for inclusion and equal access to political participation. That access and opportunity to participate must be provided as a matter of right and not privilege. Speaking on the debate, the Convener said “This debate will help the youth and students to articulate and advocate for inclusion in the candidate manifesto.” The debate will be updated live on social media and stream live on our platform. We hereby use this medium to solicit the support of well meaning Lagosians and stakeholders to invest in the youth market and we are open for partnership. This debate is packaged by Coalition of Youth organisation and Students in Lagos State and it will be attended by over 1000 youth and students in all the tertiary institution across Lagos.
