{Parks} Botanical Garden of MSU “Aptekarsky Ogorod” The Botanical Garden of MSU “Aptekarsky Ogorod” is the oldest scientific and botanical establishment of Russia. It is founded by Peter the Great in 1706 as the “Aptekarsky Ogorod” (Pharmaceutical kitchen garden) for medical plants cultivation at the northern suburb of Moscow behind Sukharev Tower. In 1805 Ogorod was purchased by the Moscow University and turned into Botanical garden. The old park keeps unchanged design features of XVIII century and its subsequent changes during the epoch of landscape garden style. Some trees in the park have reached the age of 250 - 300, among them there is a white willow, the oldest tree in the central part of Moscow, and a larch which according to the legend was planted by Peter the Great himself. Unique collections of tropical and subtropical plants, including age-old palm trees and cycads, are presented in old greenhouses of original architecture some of which were gifted to the garden from collection of Count Razumovsky and Demidov`s greenhouses on Vorobyovy Gory at the beginning of the last century.
