Parliamentary Secretary Deepak Obhrai to attend a Ministerial Conference on Security in Abuja, Nigeria The Honourable Deepak Obhrai, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and for International Human Rights, will travel to Abuja, Nigeria on Wednesday Sep 3, 2014 to participate in a Ministerial Conference on Security. The security conference will serve as a follow up to the meeting held in London and will include neighbouring countries of Benin, Cameroon, Chad, Niger, the United Kingdom, United States, and France. During his visit, Obhrai will meet with civil society members to discuss the forthcoming elections in Nigeria, the Human Rights situation in the northeast as a result of conflict, and Child Early Forced Marriage rights. Background: Nigeria will hold both presidential and general elections in February 2015. There are concerns regarding the feasibility of free and fair elections given the security environment in the north as well as the capacity of Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct such a massive electoral exercise. Civil society representatives working on elections-related issues will share their views and provide analysis on the pending elections.
