Passing of Andy Machny It is with a very heavy heart that I announce the death of my best friend, Andy Machny. Andy passed this morning in Montreal after a brief illness. Andy was a consummate iconoclast and reveled in the role of contrarian. Highly intelligent, there was no one I would rather discuss politics and current events. He was amazingly informed especially for someone who ardently refused to own a computer or use the Internet. As I said Andy was a contrarian! Andy and I met at Father Mac for Grade 7 in 1970 and has been my best friend since. Growing up in St. Laurent we both were formed by the Montreal of the 70’s. We experienced our first beer together along with other not so legal substances! Under aged we still were able to gain entry to the Texas and the TiPee (I know misspelled) taverns. Both were places that I wouldn’t get caught dead in today but back then they held the allure of the Sirens call. Andy was quite literary and extremely well read. He was a Greek among the Romans (or plebes) at Pepsi where he worked for over 25 years but was always able appear like a regular guy with his workmates. Over the years one of highlights of my return visits to Montreal (Along with Decarie Hot Dog) would be getting together with Andy and his wife Diane. His wife Diane and sister Betty along with myself and other Father Mac alumnus will miss Andy. We miss you already Mr. Machny.
