Pearl of wisdom I overheard the other day On the ab crunch - TopicsExpress

Pearl of wisdom I overheard the other day On the ab crunch machine.... Were going to make this next set anaerobic This is a prime example of a word being used to confuse and make an exercise sound better than what it is. Anaerobic refers to there being a lack of oxygen present, therefore this must have been some amazing move as the abdominals are largely made up of Type 1 muscles fibres (slow twitch/aerobic) which work better for endurance and have better powers of recovery. This is the reason your abs dont cramp up 24/7. To give some perspective. To push above you bodies anaerobic threshold you need to be working at roughly 85-90% of your maximum heart rate. So given that a crunch, weighted or not, doesnt even stimulate the most muscle fibres of all the abs moves, it would be pretty hard to train them anaerobically. I can hear my clients reading this and screaming, but we feel sick when doing crunches etc!!!, but thats due to tempo and depth of contraction, not intensity. So just be aware of BS people
