Perth Kilt Run – A Tale of Two Perths Kilt Race World Record Target Set Perth Kilt Run organisers have revealed that the world record target for the race on Saturday, 10th August has been set at 1,758 kilted runners. Canada’s race promoters - Running Goat Timing - have confirmed Perth Ontario’s annual kilt race, held last Saturday 22nd June, posted a new kilt race record total of 1,757 runners. They have also advised that they will not be seeking official Guinness world record verification for their event this year. Provost of Perth and Kinross, Liz Grant, welcomed the news: “It’s great that we now know exactly what the kilt race world record target is. In the spirit of the friendly kilt race rivalry, we will only claim a new world record if we beat the latest Canadian race total. “ And in an appeal to kilted runners, she added: “Of course, we would still like to gather 2,000 kilted runners to post not only a new world record but also set one which will be all the harder to beat in the future. It’s definitely a case of the more, the merrier!” Twinned with Perth in Ontario since 2001, the two Perths are both set in picturesque locations on the banks of a River Tay. The Canadian town, which has just over 6,000 residents, celebrated its Scottish connections by establishing the first kilt run in 2010 with other contests including haggis hurling and shortbread baking also being held on the day. Perth, Scotland took up the challenge in 2012 as part of the new city’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations. Then just over 1,000 runners narrowly missing out on securing the kilt race world record for Scotland. Whatever the outcome of this particular international sporting contest, it is certainly promoting positive international relations and the celebration of Scottish culture and heritage. perthkiltrun.co.uk
