Playhouse Honors Ellis As Area’s ‘Music Man’ The winter Classic Movie Series at the Playhouse Theatre in Randolph culminates with “The Music Man” next Wednesday, March 26 at 7:30 p.m. This 1962 musical, nominated for six Oscars, stars Robert Preston as Professor Harold Hill, the role he won a Tony award for on Broadway in 1958. The all-star cast also features Shirley Jones, Paul Ford, Buddy Hackett, and a very young Ron Howard as Winthrop. The movie is presented as a tribute to Central Vermont’s own Music Man, Dick Ellis, who once met the fictional Music Man when Preston visited South Royalton many years ago. Ellis is widely recognized as one of Vermont’s pioneer music educators for teaching music in many schools throughout the White River Valley. His instrument rental business, Ellis Music Co., reaches young musicians all over Vermont. He is also legendary for his commitment and 66-year leadership of the South Royalton Town Band. Countless youth have gained expertise and a love of music because of his dedication to the arts as an essential part of our educational system. Before the showing of the film on March 26, Ellis will be recognized for his lifelong efforts. According to Rev. Jim Thomas, a member of the Playhouse Cooperative, this event may sell out, and pre-purchase of tickets is recommended. More information and tickets are available at playhouseflicks
