After the death of their daughter Lisa, in 1978, Charlotte’s energies were devoted primarily to POMC and advocating for victims’ rights. In 1985, she went to graduate school and subsequently earned her Ohio counselor’s license. At that time she also entered a program of spiritual studies at Sancta Sophia Seminary, and her ordination in 1988 was as part of the International Council of Community Churches. She continued her training in death and dying work with Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross and others, and for approximately 15 years she served as a counselor during Sancta Sophia Seminary’s annual Counseling Week of studies. Currently, she is pursuing her interests in depth psychology and dream work. Robert Hullinger is a retired Lutheran minister who graduated from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, 55 years ago. He has served parishes in California, Kentucky, and Ohio, including 17 years at an inner-city ministry in downtown Cincinnati. From POMC’s beginning until 1986 he served as POMC’s first president and publisher of the SURVIVORS newsletter. He also conducted training sessions for professionals working in various fields, including clergy, police, and victim service providers. At present he works with the editorial team of the POMC newsletter, SURVIVORS. Dr. Marlene Young For more than a generation, many who have worked in the victims’ movement have seen Marlene Young as the preeminent professional victims’ advocate, bringing knowledge, experience, and leadership to the emerging field. Dr. Young was a member of the founding board of the National Organization for Victim Assistance (NOVA). She served as its president (1979-81), and its executive director (1981-2005). She is a past president of the World Society of Victimology (WSV) and the president of the International Organization for Victim Assistance (IOVA). She also chaired WSV’s 12th International Symposium on Victimology (2006). Dr. Young received her doctorate from Georgetown University in Washington, DC, and her law degree from Willamette University in Salem, Oregon. Brooks Douglass Brooks Douglass is a film producer and actor, lawyer, businessman, and former Oklahoma state senator. His 1990 election at 27 made him the state’s youngest state senator ever. His signature legislation was a bill championing the rights of crime victims in 1992. As a 16-year-old, Brooks and his sister survived the 1979 murder of his parents and the attempted murder of his sister and himself. Two drifters broke into their home, robbing and shooting the family. In 2010 Brooks produced and starred in “Heavens Rain”, recounting his family’s horror and the story of his sister’s and his path to forgiving the killers. In 2011, the U.S. Dept. of Justice selected Brooks for the Ronald Wilson Reagan Innovations in Public Policy Award for his work in crime victims’ rights. Last year, he supported HJR 106 before Congress, seeking congressional support for the Victims’ Rights Amendment (VRA). The bill, which was reported out of the Constitution sub-committee of the U.S. House last year, was recently reintroduced in the current legislative session as HJR 40. Brooks has been traveling throughout the United States speaking and meeting with groups interested in helping secure the amendment’s passage, in addition to working with members of Congress. Brooks has made passage of the amendment a full-time commitment.
