Police release CCTV captured seconds before tattoo artist is fatally shot - SCC Homicide Homicide Squad detectives investigating the fatal shooting of a tattoo artist in 2011 have released CCTV footage captured just seconds before the man was shot. The CCTV, recorded inside a tattoo parlour, shows 40-year-old Daniel Vella coming face-to-face with the man who fatally shot him. On the night of Saturday 26 March 2011, Mr Vella and another tattoo artist were attending to two clients inside the main studio of the Pretty In Ink tattoo parlour on Victoria Road, West Ryde. Another staff member and a third client were in the front reception area of the parlour. About 9.45pm, two men – both with their faces disguised by hoods and bandanas – walked into the main studio via a rear entrance to the property. One of the men, who was armed with a handgun, pointed the weapon at Mr Vella before firing a single shot into the tattoo artist’s left shoulder. The armed man then proceeded to discharge the weapon a further four times, before he and his accomplice fled through the rear door onto Gaza Road. They have not been seen since. Aside from the bullet that hit Mr Vella, none of the other four shots led to anyone being injured or killed. The two other parlour employees working that night, and the three clients, all ran from the studio onto Victoria Road and immediately called emergency services. Mr Vella also ran out of the shop onto Victoria Road, before collapsing onto the footpath. He was treated at the scene by ambulance paramedics before being transported to hospital. He was pronounced dead upon arrival at Royal North Shore Hospital. Detectives from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad formed Strike Force Wootten to investigate the shooting and are hoping the release of CCTV will prompt someone to come forward. “It’s now been more than two years since Daniel Vella was ruthlessly killed in front of a number of people,” Detective Inspector Angelo Memmolo said. “His family and friends still don’t know who killed him or why they did it, and they will be unable to find closure until the people responsible for this shocking event are brought to justice. “If you have any information, no matter how small or insignificant it may seem, please contact us.” The men depicted in the CCTV are both heavily disguised. The armed man appears to be wearing a grey hooded-jumper, blue tracksuit pants with three stripes down the side, athletic shoes and pink gloves. The second man depicted in the CCTV appears to be wearing a grey hooded-jumper, light-coloured pants and white shoes. Police are urging anyone with information about this incident to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or use the Crime Stoppers online reporting page: https://www1.police.nsw.gov.au/.
