Pork barrel (aptly called Priority Development Assistance Fund) is on the brink of elimination from the halls of Congress. A big step, indeed, for a nation plagued by a terrible "padrino" system and a culture of asking rather than working for something. We are truly and boldly going through the path of change. But the sad thing is, not everyone shares the sentiment of change. In fact, still some people want it for the same reasons they ask politicians for cash -- to make ends meet, to treat a loved one dying of kidney failure, to simply get by every single day. Back in my years as a debating student, varying motions that have anything to do with pork barrel have been commonplace. And debate in and debate out, this same argument comes out of my mouth -- the Legislative Branch deals with legislation, and legislation alone. Highways, constructions, or many so-called projects are NOT part of its job description. Leave that to the Executive Branch. The funds supposed to be used on the macro scale to alleviate poverty as a whole are NOT funds to treat individual patients. The more we cling to our old perceptions, the more firmly we nail the nation down to the ground, stuck in the misery of bad culture, lost identity, and selfishness. We need a cultural revolution of our own. We have to make a statement. NO TO PORK BARREL.
