President Assad last man standing: Analysts Analysts say Syrian President Bashar Al Assad (pictured) is the last man standing in a conflict where the West has failed to effect illegal regime change. International relations analyst Conwell Muzhanye says the West has bowed to pressure and has failed to influence the outcome of political events in the Middle East nation. Muzhanye said the West was never going to afford a war in Syria considering the economic crisis facing the bloc. Political analyst Alexander Rusero says the war talk in Syria was never anything beyond a talk as the US could not afford to fund any war at the moment. The US has hit hard times as the country waged costly wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya. As at April 2, 2013, debt in that country held by the public was approximately US$11.959 trillion or about 75 percent of GDP. Intra-governmental holdings stood at $4.846 trillion, giving a combined total public debt of $16.805 trillion. While there is consensus that waging a war is not feasible at the moment, President Assad has the last laugh as the Syrian government brings under control the rebels who were threatening to over-run the country.
