Presidents Message: December 2014 I had a meeting this past - TopicsExpress

Presidents Message: December 2014 I had a meeting this past month with the President and Vice President of Apex Motorsports. Apex was formed out of Island Rallysport Club, which was formed from the Nanaimo Sports Car Club. Glyn Trafford and Bart Vogelzang were very interested in reading my last months message, especially where I said I would like to see our club headed. They are currently in a position of stale-mate. Their membership has dropped over the years and now they are sitting at seven members. They havent had quorum for a meeting in over a year. It has been two years since their last event, a Midnight Rally from Sooke to Cowichan Valley via Port Renfrew. After a long discussion they have asked that we take over the assets of Apex Motorsports. That includes a blue utility trailer (formerly owned by VMSC), a bank account, safety gear, Rally timers, Radios, Trophies, and canopies. I am very interested in putting on a TSD Island Rally. That is a ton of work. Glyn and Bart would very much like to be a part this. They have a brand new Forester fueled up and ready to find roads for a TSD right now. While I cannot commit to a full TSD this season I do see us being able to at least put on a poker run for starters. Hopefully that fun run will generate interest, and I am hoping that some of our senior Rally members come forward to work on this project as well. We kicked around a ton ideas at this meeting. If this proves to be successful we may be able to one day offer a three stage experience like Targa Newfoundland, which would extend to all car clubs and showcase some of the not so well known areas of Vancouver Island. It could very well be epic for motorsport, tourism, and small business. That said, I do not want to spread ourselves to thin. We have a successful and well run organization. I am wanting to keep our auto slalom events running strong. I want to see our Time Attack and Lapping Days get more members out and be just as popular. If we do go down the road of taking on Rally and TSD I want those events to be kick ass in every way. I see no point in doing something halfway. So please come out to the December meeting and voice your opinion yea or nay. There was also mention of a Toy Drive last month. I know the Vancouver Island Subaru Club made a huge donation last year to local radio station the Zones Event at Mayfair Mall the morning of December 11. It would be great to send along some of our club members with their cars full of loot too. Bart Gilmour has offered to drive around and pick up toys if you cant be able to make it yourself. Hope to see you all at the meet Wednesday, if not have a wonderful holiday - and rest up for a busy race season! Jason Gunn
