Press Release: Wanaka Beerworks and Jabberwocky Brewery unite to make life even better! The uniting of two craft beer-making companies was cause for celebration last week, with Jabberwocky Brewery purchasing Wanaka Beerworks. New owners Ruenell and Mike Wing of Clyde, together with business partner Scott Beattie of Alexandra, are excited about establishing a permanent home for their up and coming Jabberwocky label within the iconic Wanaka-based brewery, to continue the tradition of creating exceptional hand-crafted beers for New Zealanders and overseas visitors. “Jabberwocky has only been in commercial operation since January this year and we jumped at the opportunity to pool our resources with Wanaka Beerworks which has been a local institution since 1998,” Mike Wing says. Jabberwocky’s “new world” kiwi-style pale and amber ales will be brewed under the Wanaka Beerworks roof, at its Wanaka airport base. However, not to mess with perfection, they plan to keep the Wanaka Beerworks’ “old-world” European-tasting beers exactly the same, with brewers Ken Super and Andrew Boulton continuing to run the operation. “We’re really keen to take on the new Jabberwocky brews, which complement the Wanaka Beerworks offerings, but without overlapping the styles,” Ken Super says. Inspired by the Lewis Carroll poem The Jabberwock from his Alice in Wonderland novel, this mythical winged creature is alive and well in Central Otago, in the tales told to a young Scott Beattie by his grandfather, while they were out mustering on their St Bathans farm. “The idea was to keep young musterers vigilant so precious supplies, such as their lunch, or worse, their beer, didn’t go missing!” Jabberwocky Brewery is sure its mischievous mascot’s all-seeing eye that features so prominently on the label, will be keeping a close watch over the new venture at Wanaka. The Wing-Beattie partnership intends showing both their craft beer labels at major events over the spring and summer.
