Progressive attorneys organization The National Lawyers Guild joins the U.S. Conference of Mayors this week in denouncing America’s failed war on marijuana. In a new report titled, “High Crimes: Strategies to Further Marijuana Legalization Initiatives” the Guild suggests reframing marijuana use as a public health not a criminal justice issue, challenging failed world drug treaties, supporting states’ rights to regulate cannabis use, and reclassifying pot for medical research. “High Crimes” also notes that Drug War profiteers in law enforcement and the private prison industry are strangling reasonable debate. “It is crucial to examine who profits from the continued prohibition of marijuana,” said Guild senior researcher Traci Yoder, the report’s author. Seizing citizens’ property and money in drug investigations is funding “the increasing militarization of police forces, [and ...] Continued profit making by private corrections corporations is contingent upon ever-increasing rates of incarceration.” “Marijuana legalization will create new jobs, generate millions of dollars in tax revenue, and allow law enforcement to focus on serious crimes,” said Brian Vicente, Guild member and Colorado activist.
