Yet I could not be prouder of you, and the role grassroots supporters and volunteers have played in this campaign. You have been part of the biggest Labor volunteer campaign ever and you have made a real difference. There are seats we have won this evening which we simply would not have, without your work and support. While we did not achieve our ultimate goal we did achieve so much. You have made well over one million phone calls to voters, knocked on more than 50,000 doors and together, your small donations – averaging $64 each – have become the single largest financial contributor to this campaign. These aren’t just impressive numbers: they say something about who are we as a movement and where we go from here. We are the oldest political party in Australia, and the first Labor party to win government in the world. For more than 120 years, we’ve stood as the party of ‘we’ not ‘me’. Those are our values, and standing for those values is what will shape our future and the future of the country we love.
