Psalm 65 — A Paraphrase: To the chief Musician, A Psalm [and] Song of David. Praise waits for You, O God, in Sion. To You shall the vow be performed. You Who hear prayer. To You shall all flesh come. Iniquities prevail against me, our transgressions. You shall purge them away. Blessed [is the man] You choose,[1] and cause to approach [You], [so that] he may dwell in Your courts. We shall be satisfied with the goodness of Your house, of Your holy temple. [With] terrifying things in righteousness, You answer us, O God of our salvation, the confidence of all the ends of the earth, and of those who are afar off [on] the sea. Who by His strength sets fast the mountains, girded with power: Who stills the noise of the seas, the noise of their waves, and the tumult of the people. They also that dwell in the uttermost parts are afraid of Your tokens. You make the beginning of the morning and evening rejoice. You visit the earth, and water it: You greatly enrich it with the river of God, [which] is full of water. You prepare corn for them, when You have so provided for it. You water its ridges abundantly: You settle its furrows. You make it soft with showers. You bless the springing[2] of it. You crown the year with Your goodness; and Your paths drop fatness. They drop [on] the pastures of the wilderness: and the little hills rejoice on every side. The pastures are clothed with flocks. The valleys also are covered over with corn. They shout for joy. They also sing.[3] [1] Ultimately, this man is Jesus Christ. [2] The first blades of the crops rising from the earth. [3] A metonymy, the crops are said to sing, rather than the farmer. This provides the lines for a hymn, “The valleys are so rich with corn that they laugh and sing.”
