Putin the Belligerent Jon E. Dougherty Following Russia’s successful annexation of Ukraine’s Crimea region into the Russian Federations, the Baltic nations of Eastern Europe, all former Soviet satellites, are getting nervous. That’s understandable, given Russian President Vladimir Putin’s justification for intervening in Crimea. True, Moscow has always had a strategic interest there since the breakup of the former Soviet Union, but not simply because the Russian Black Sea Fleet is stationed at Sevastopol, in Crimea. But blood is thicker than the steel on a warship. If Putin and his foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov, are to be believed, it was language – the one tie that binds – which drove Moscow to act. The bulk of citizenry in Crimea was Russian; the government in Kyiv was increasingly seen as a pro-Western persecutor of ethnic Russians. Using this as his impetus, Putin acted.
