Q&A with ‘The Paw Man’ (389) – So Happy Or Sad I Could Just Pee Sioned Mair Boyle Hi paw man, Ive been following you for a little while now and there’s only one thing Im worried about that you havent covered. Im getting a Springer x Cocker in a few weeks and was just wondering if you had any tips for stopping the excited submissive weeing they seem to be partial too when owners come home or they are greeted by other people or animals. I was thinking of the treat only training method as it could be related to fear but I dont want to end up with an unbalanced dog that thinks shes good all the time. Paw Man There are two different types or urination we are dealing with here; Submissive/Fearful urination and Excited urination. Both of these are triggered by the peaks and troughs of behavior. Sioned If there is a way of preventing it from even starting or stopping it if she does start becoming more water feature than a K9 I would love some advice on how to control the situation. Paw Man The best way to address these two behaviors is to avoid creating the peaks and troughs of behavioral interaction with the dog. So if you approach the dog and it starts to pee, then stop and walk away. Speaking to the dog in a high pitched happy voice easily excites a young dog too much and often causes excited urination. An over exuberant greeting or a vocally harsh reprimand can also cause urination in sensitive or very young dogs. The urination is the dog’s way of telling you that it is emotionally overloaded. Sioned My Auntys dog has the same problem and shes 6 so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Hope to hear back from you. Sioned Paw Man For a dog of 6 years of age to still be having problems with urination I would advise her to take it to her Vet to rule out any physiological cause. Vets can also prescribe medication to assist some dogs with bladder control issues. If the dog is a very nervous or stress type dog you might want to consider ‘Adaptil’ – Dog Appeasing Pheromone to address the underlying anxiety.
