Q&A with ‘The Paw Man’ (654) – To Pee Or Not To Pee, That Is The Question Bronwyn Wellington Hi Paw Man I have a 7 yr old Poodle X Bichon Frise, she was toilet trained within a week or so of coming into the home as a puppy. She never toilets in the house and comes and goes freely through a doggie door. Problem is when she goes to my sister’s house, as soon as she gets inside she wees on the floor. Paw Man Many dog owners do not realise that toilet training is a location specific behavior. When you move from one house to another house there is only a 50/50 chance that the dog will bring its toilet training along with it and apply it to the new location. Bronwyn If I instruct her to go outside upon arrival she wont wee in the house. If she stays at my sisters for a few days she sometimes wees in the house. My sister has a 7 yr old poodle and the dogs get on well. She knows where the doggie door is at my sisters. Any ideas on how I can stop this behaviour? Thank you in advance Bronwyn. Paw Man The solution is quite simple really… Read Q&A #651 & 652 and then you will understand why the following will work. Tell your sister to play your dog outside her place in a location where she (or you) can see it. The dog is to remain outside until someone sees it toileting outside, at which time they rush happily to the dog and reward is lavishly using lots of hands-on praise… and then the dog is allowed inside your sister’s house, but only for as long as it can be visually observed. If the dog cannot be watched then you have two choices….. place it inside a crate inside the house or place the dog back outside.
