Quest For Knowledge Mini History Lesson For Today: From May to September 1787 a group of men known as the Framers met. On September 17, 1787, the United States Constitution was signed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania after the weeks of debate and compromise that had been the Constitutional Convention. The battle to ratify the document had been rough. Every time the delegates thought they had the Constitution ironed out; another subject was put up for debate. But the 39 delegates were steadfast and the Constitution was narrowly ratified. The minimum amount of states, nine out of thirteen, actually voted to ratify the document. Two states took a long time to decide to agree. These states were Rhode Island and North Carolina. In the end, they did agree. Once the first nine states agreed, we say the Constitution was ratified. New Hampshire was the ninth state to ratify. Ben Franklin said the he was not sure if the plan was perfect. He said that it was probably as perfect as it could be. The Constitution was the first constitution of its kind, and has influenced the constitutions of other nations. Citizens of the United States have celebrated Independence Day and Presidents Day since the 1870s, and in 2005, the nation began to celebrate Constitution Day. Also known as Citizenship Day, Constitution Day is an American holiday honoring the day 39 delegates to the Constitutional Convention signed the United States Constitution: September 17, 1787.Its almost impossible to imagine the Constitution without having a Bill of Rights, but when it was first being drafted, a majority of the Founding Fathers didnt think it was necessary. However, there were a few men who believed it was so significant that they refused to sign the Constitution because it didnt have one. Three famous refusers were George Mason of Virginia, Elbridge Gerry of Massachusetts, and Edmund Randolph of Virginia. As it turned out, these three were not the only ones who thought this was an issue. When State ratification messages started arriving with their own commentary and suggestions for individual rights, Congress began to consider the idea of a Bill of Rights.” James Madison was responsible for drafting the document, and originally wrote 17 sections. This number was whittled down to 12, but only ten of which were ratified by a majority of the States. These final ten became the first ten Amendments to the United States (U.S.) Constitution. youtube/watch?v=FzAJyK0ovo8
