Question of the Week: Why do Osprey nest on platforms and poles? Osprey are often seen sitting on great big stick nests on top of utility poles, platform sites and other barren elevated features. The reason for this behavior is due to their specialized wrists and how they land on a perch. While other raptors glide below the perch and rise to a halt, Osprey fly above a perch, hover, and then drop down on top of it. The Osprey in this photo demonstrates this technique and with branches in its way would be difficult to do so. Photo courtesy of Sue Ernisse.
